Waveney
The Waveney constituency consists of the main town, Lowestoft (population 68,340), Britain's most easterly point; the market towns of Beccles and Bungay; Kessingland (the largest village in Suffolk) and 35 villages of rural north east Suffolk.
Lowestoft's main industries are food processing, offshore oil and gas, joinery,
engineering and a call centre. It is the most easterly port in Britain, handling
grain exports, aggregates, timber and offshore safety vessels.
In addition, Lowestoft is developing an offshore wind energy industry and in
December 2004, the largest on-shore wind turbine, named Gulliver, was built
in Lowestoft by the sea. The port is now the operational base for the Greater
Gabbard - the largest offshore wind farm under construction in the world. The
proposed 1000 turbine East Anglia Array offshore wind farm, on Lowestoft's door
step, promises thousands of new jobs for the area.
Lowestoft is officially England's best beach, is a gateway to the Broads National Park and has 2 yacht marinas.
Beccles and Bungay are delightful, historic market towns on the river Waveney. They both have long established printing industries. Beccles' main industry is plastics, while Bungay boasts a castle and many antique shops.
Farming is mainly arable and poultry.
